Have you noticed the light beginning to change? It's getting that painfully beautiful honey color. It feels different too--the sun still feels warm on the skin but there is an occasional chilly breeze blowing through. My toes have been cold. I am feeling nostalgic and a little melancholy. I haven't played any badminton this Summer. I haven't been swimming. I haven't eaten outdoors by candlelight. These things will have to wait until next year.

This photo from floral designer Fox Fodder Farms perfectly captures my mood. A bouquet of Summer's last flowers and Winter's grasses, captured in that certain slant of light. I'm reminded to bring in more flowers and branches and grasses--bits of outside to savor inside.

  1. I feel it, too! It's an odd feeling. On the one hand, I'm looking forward to having a broader view of my garden, seeing the full width of the paths again, sipping eggnog, enjoying the autumn colors, pumpkins in the fields, and dreaming of spring. On the other hand, I'm not ready for summer to end; they seem to get shorter every year!

The picture also reminds me that if making one's own cut offs, one should either shorten the pockets or lengthen the legs:)

    1. The eggnog is good solace--thanks for reminding me of the pleasures of Winter. And I noticed the same thing about the shorts!

  2. The light is definitely changing...but I revel in it...it's so lovely...and suffused with different colors now. A few days ago, we have a lovely rose-tinted sunset...it was eerily beautiful! Swimming, you may be too late for, but you can still eat outside by candlelight...it won't rain for at least another month!

    1. Yeah, the light sure is beautiful--great for your photos! And it looks like Summer isn't gone quite yet. Looking forward to this heat wave coming next week. Maybe my gazillion tomatoes will have a chance to ripen after all.

  3. September is the new August, haven't you heard? If Loree says so, it must be true. And a new heat wave is said to be coming...so plan on enjoying the best of both worlds

    1. Yeah, I guess my prayer for a little bit more Summer will be answered next week. Hooray! Oh, and we are setting up the badminton net today. Might even throw together some Pimm's Cups!
