About

My name is Bria and this is my blog about gardening. For nine years I ran the online cult boutique Le Train Bleu and you can now find me writing about fashion at LOVEJOY. Bell and Star is my other blog and gardening is my other passion.

I come from a long line of enthusiastic gardeners: my maternal Grandma Ruby, gardening on the Olympic Peninsula, used to work in a Cowichan sweater and amended her soul by digging peat from a nearby bog. What a gal! I wish I had a photo. I remember my Grandpa Joplin was a master of sweet peas and gardened in a pair of dungarees and rainbow suspenders. My mother is my greatest inspiration--growing up, she managed to make a garden wherever we lived, always creating something extraordinary out of what seemed like thin air.

Even though I was surrounded by gardeners I was a late bloomer, not really getting interested in creating a garden of my own until I bought my first house in Portland, Oregon. I wanted to create a patio with red geraniums so I could listen to the Victrola outside (or at least iPod) during warm Summer days just like in Il Postino. A few geraniums lead to banana trees, Chinese rice paper plants, bamboo, palms, and on and on. I am now insatiable.

Influenced by the places I've spent time (the Pacific Northwest, Sonoma County, Hawaii, San Diego) as well as my English heritage, there really isn't an area of gardening that doesn't pique my interest in some way now.

I look forward to sharing my adventures in gardening with you here (and the cooking and entertaining that are resultant enjoyments). Thanks for stopping by!
Bria Lena

  3. Bria -

Lovely words. I too come from a long lineage of gardeners. My paternal grandmother was a Morse of Ferry Morse seeds, the Tantau name is linked with rose hybrid development for generations, my dad even plucked seeds for packaging as a teen. For me, the garden is my sanctuary, my peace. It is where I regenerate and am one with the world. With my dog watching over my every move, I prune, pinch and cultivate.

Thank you for sharing your gardening passion with us. I found you through the Country Living awards - I feel I've won something.

Happy February - must go prune.

    Sincerely,
    Shelley
